چکیده

Universal/existential quantifiers can be seen as generalization of logical conjunction/disjunction. The universal (existential) quantification of an open proposition is the conjunction (disjunction) of all its possible instantiations. In other words, conjunction (disjunction) is a special kind of universal (existential) quantification where the domain of the variable is restricted to the set of the conjuncts (disjuncts). The Japanese language seems to reflect this logical relationship. A common way in Japanese to express universal or existential quantification is to use a wh-pronoun in combination with mo or ka, particles otherwise used to denote conjunction or disjunction (Let’s call this quantification wh-mo/ka).1 Actually, there is a strong parallelism between these two uses of the particles:

universal(-Iike) quantifiers in Japanese

In Japanese a certain kind of phrase, which Kuroda (1965) calls "indetenninate", can function as a wh-phrase, existential quantifier or universal quantifier depending on context and the use of particles. I argue that "indetenninates" are contrastive-focused, and that the meanings of existential and universal quantifiers are made of (in)finite application of disjunction ("ka") and conjunction ("...

Rule-based Translation of Quantifiers for Chinese-Japanese Machine Translation

Quantifiers and numerals often cause mistakes in Chinese-Japanese machine translation. In this paper, an approach to quantifier translation is proposed based on the syntactic features after classification. First, morphological analysis is performed on sentences extracted from a Chinese-Japanese aligned corpus, which consists of quantifiers and numerals. Next, statistical information is obtained...

Toward a Unified Analysis of the Scope Interpretation of Complex Predicates in Japanese: Evidence from the Light Verb Construction

In this paper, I first make an observation that there is a certain parallelism in the scope interpretation possibilities of adverbs and quantifiers with respect to different types complex predicates in Japanese, drawing on a comparison of the light verb construction and the causative construction. I will then argue that previous approaches to complex predicates in Japanese in the lexicalist tra...

A Unified Approach for Design of Lp Polynomial Algorithms

By summarizing Khachiyan's algorithm and Karmarkar's algorithm forlinear program (LP) a unified methodology for the design of polynomial-time algorithms for LP is presented in this paper. A key concept is the so-called extended binary search (EBS) algorithm introduced by the author. It is used as a unified model to analyze the complexities of the existing modem LP algorithms and possibly, help ...

An Empirical Comparison of Performance of the Unified Approach to Linearization of Variance Estimation after Imputation with Some Other Methods

Imputation is one of the most common methods to reduce item non_response effects. Imputation results in a complete data set, and then it is possible to use naϊve estimators. After using most of common imputation methods, mean and total (imputation estimators) are still unbiased. However their variances (imputation variances) are underestimated by naϊve variance estimators. Sampling mechanism an...
